Can someone please help me? There is something wrong with my calendar. And from the looks of things, it’s only my calendar because the ones used by the rest of the world must be different. When I flip through MY calendar, I see Halloween in October, Thanksgiving in November, and then Christmas in December. After this past weekend, I’m convinced that Thanksgiving has fallen off the map because according to all the stores, Christmas is not only the next holiday, it’s coming right now!
This past Saturday, my daughter and I wandered into Homegoods. We always enjoy a nice Homegoods run, and I thought we might pick up a few Thanksgiving-themed items for our dining room. WRONG! Thanksgiving was nowhere to be found. As far as the eye could see there were Christmas trees, wreaths, holiday chocolate displays, stockings and the like. What am I supposed to do with those? Put Santas on my Thanksgiving table next to the turkey? Should I serve the gravy in a boat decorated with Frosty while wearing a red apron embroidered with Mrs. Claus? Where are the little Anna Lee pilgrim decorations? What about an amber-colored glass turkey candy dish? What about an autumn-themed runner for my table? I was soooo out of luck.
Things went downhill from there. At Ulta I tried to buy a simple bottle of nail polish only to be surrounded by a bevy of holiday gift sets. Little boxes shaped like Christmas ornaments filled with lip balm, hand lotion and bath fizzies filled the store. Do we really need to start buying this stuff now? Leave it to a teenager to put life in perspective. My daughter looked at me and said, “Mom, the Christmas stuff has been out all month, why are you so surprised? Just ignore it if you don’t like it!”
The only problem is that I can’t ignore it. Why has Thanksgiving become a lost holiday? When did we collectively decide that once we get to Halloween, we then go straight to Christmas? I want Thanksgiving and everything that goes along with it! I want my last embrace of autumn, I want the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, I want to sit on the couch with my kids and watch Snoopy make Thanksgiving dinner with popcorn, buttered toast and jelly beans! Enough with this insanity! I want my lost holiday back! Who’s with me??
